bugdust...
This forum is categorized a little different than most so I'm not sure where to post project pics or introductions. I thre a few pics of my son's 64 in the Tech section? and I guess I'll introduce myself here...name's Charlie.
I'm in Middleburg, FL (near Jax). I've owned a bug or sixty over the years. I have a 62 bug vert "project" that I may work on someday. Right now I'm working on a 64 for my 15 yr old son. I have shallow pockets so it will take some time to finish.
I do industrial 3D design work for a living. Nothing fancy, mostly shop fixtures to help build actual products (heavy equipment attachments). The engineers design a product...I figure out how to build it (fixture design, process development & validation, standard work procedures (how-to books), quality checks and employee training). I was a welder for about 14 years before that.

Yeah, it's for my soon-to-be 16 yr old. A 1600 will be plenty. Besides, I have a 40-horse in my 62 vert.

Yeah, I'm not planning on building anything worthy of the BKC, just a decent driver for my kid. After it is on the road I will figure out if I'm going to build the 62 vert for myself or not. I think I'd rather have a 58-59 euro ragtop. I just need to find someone with one that wants to trade for a vert.

I don't know what 1600s you guys have been driving but he should have no problems. I may switch out the trans later to give him some more top end but he'll be fine for now. My old 67 with a stock 67 trans, 1600 single-port and 185/55s on the back would cruise 75-80 all day long with no problems. It did even better with 165s on it. I drove it all over while I had it...Jax Bch, St. Augustine, Daytona, Tampa, Lakeland, back & forth to work almost daily...everywhere. It never saw a trailer until the day I sold it.
