Oval Steering Stuff

Post  JEFF KYLE on Sun 28 Mar 2010, 9:45 pm

I have some questions about my steering on the 55...
It looks like the OG column...what's the little tube and pin halfway down the length?
Mine looks welded together in the middle of the shaft...why would that be?
The end where the wheel attaches looks diff. than ones on Samba for the year...is mine F.U.?
Can a later shaft be fitted in the 55 column?

That is the location for your horn connection. A tubular switch fits in there that makes contact with a special section on the steering shaft itself.

This end of your steering tube (Steering wheel end) looks the same as my '58. Don't know if the '55 is the same or not.

I built mine backwards

Not sure why it would look welded... but the pin in the side of the column housing holds the brush for the horn.

and I should have the correct shaft if you need it or to compare yours too..

OK Charles,
I will just put it together temp so I can steer the car. When it's at your place we can see what'sup...I could just put a later column in too.I think the old signal assem. will bolt on one.
It is coming out of the car anyway for paint.
